Food Industry

Regional food security by means of a comprehensive agricultural system is, especially in times of global crises, environmental catastrophes, price volatility and climate change, of great significance.

Approximately one third of Austrian land is cultivated for the benefit of food supply. The contribution of the food industry to the annual gross national product amounts to 12% and every sixth employed person in Austria works in this high turnover sector.

Challenges in the food industry

Companies active in the food industry are constantly faced with new challenges. These are caused, amongst others, by a predominantly saturated domestic market, competitive export markets, the high pressure on the food trade and the constantly changing demands of consumers.

Competitiveness and Innovation Required

In order to maintain or improve the competitiveness of food producers, therefore, on-going innovation is required, be it in the products, processes or packaging. The co-operation of processors and primary producers should, therefore, be intensified.

Higher Quality through Quality Assurance

Following some food scandals in Europe, „Quality Assurance and Transparency“ – in relation to the origin of food – has become an important issue for the end consumer. At no point in time has the compliance with mandatory standards been as significant as today.
